SCHICKHARDT CONCERTO#3 FOUR TRAVERSI

Post by maurice alan quinn »

I am wondering whether anybody else has confronted the copyist's error in Movement Three (Giga) of the above work?
In the opening half of the Giga (comprising thirty-four bars) the Flauto #3 part has but twenty-six bars; a deficit of eight bars. I found that out when I was making a Sibelius V score of the work. The MIDI Playback was used to identify the start of the omission, the rest was cut/pasted on to the final bars of the section which - when played back again sounded in order.
Providing the missing notes of the offending section was rendered easier as the music of the other parts were episodic, rising in four ascending steps.
Providing a harpsichord realizaton of the unfigured bass (similar to the Loeillet de Gant Quintet for two traversi, two voice flutes and thoroughbass) no big deal. Telemann was notoriously bad in this department which was evidenced by the poor quality printed editions of well-meaning albeit ill-informed renditions of piano-bessoted editors.
