My problem with Rachmaninoff's piano concertos has always been that his typically overloaded piano writing has been plunked down smack in the middle of orchestral textures of worse-than-Schumann density (see my comments in the aforementioned cut-off thread). The result I find simply too opaque and turgid for my taste. It's no wonder that a pianist has hammer out these pieces in order to be heard. At least in a Rachmaninoff violin concerto the turgidity would be confined to the orchestra. If the violin writing is high enough and the orchestra kept where it is in the piano concerti, the fiddle would cut through no problem.

Note: there is no composer mentioned, which is one of the publisher's unhappy tendencies.
