Sweelinck

Someone pointed me to a link recently that, seemingly, contains the old Complete Sweelinck edition (ed. Seiffert et al), but for some reason, it won't allow me view it. Apparently, though, it's viewable in some parts of the world (possibly only the US). Can anyone get at them? They'd be a fantastic addition to IMSLP.

The 1940s revision of the Keyboard music is already up on IMSLP, actually (via the Dover reprint).

Hi Tom,

Hathitrust are notorious for restricting public domain works with errant copyright notices. It's not uncommon to find a 19th century work stamped with copyright, simply because it’s music. (Grrr!)

Try contacting feedback@issues.hathitrust.org. I have, on one occasion, dealt with a Charlie Heinz there, and he was helpful.

Give him Sweelinck's dates, also any editor's dates, and ask him to unblock it.

Right, I've e-mailed them. Hopefully, the fact that the most recent volume was published in 1901, coupled with Sweelinck's death-date of 1621 should mean that they can unblock it.

...And they emailed back. I dealt with one Gary Charbonneau, who was very helpful. It seems that:

The Netherlands is one of those "life plus 70 years" countries. We don't know for sure whether this applies to editors as well as authors, but it does in similar jurisdictions, and we don't have the resources to carry the investigation any further. We are therefore taking the conservative position on this one that the items could indeed be subject to copyright protection outside the US and will not change the status of these volumes in our system at this time. I'm sorry we could not be of further assistance.

Such a shame. Most of Seiffert's scholarly editions are in the PD, I would have thought. Oh well.
