Schubert-Krenek; Piano Sonata in C major, D. 840 Reliquie

Post by Starrmark »

IMSLP has neither Schubert's original score nor any of several completions of this important work. The Krenek completion may be PD.

Schubert-Krenek; Piano Sonata in C major, D. 840 Reliquie

from Wikipedia:

Ernst Krenek wrote his completion at the request of his friend, the pianist and composer Eduard Erdmann, who wished to add the sonata to his repertoire. Krenek himself dated that request to 1922[3]; other sources date his completion to 1921. Regardless, the work has appeared at least twice in that form on record: once in the aforementioned performance by Ray Lev on a set of 78 RPM disks issued by the American Concert Hall Society label and once performed by Friedrich Wührer on a monaural LP issued by American Vox Records. Neither recording has achieved official reissue on compact disc, although Bearac Reissues has released the Wührer performance on a CD copied from an LP.

Ray Lev's extraordinary performance can be heard on YouTube. She was a great Russian-American pianist whose name, sadly, is unknown to most, today.

Publication may post-date 1923 however – and Krenek ain’t in public domain in Canada/EU for a long time to come. Consider this doubtful, except as a possible upload to the US server if non-renewal of post-1923 publication or a faulty copyright notice permits it.

Cheers, Philip

Worldcat and specifically British Library does seem to claim (fwiw) that the copyright date is 1923. (Universal Edition no.7296.)

And in that case (a 1923 publication date) knowing our good buddies over at UE, chances are slim indeed this is public domain in America.
