Morgan Library Online Scores

Post by olmsted »

Anybody know how to download high-resolution files that Morgan displays in a Flash viewer?
Some exciting materials, http://www.themorgan.org/music/manuscriptList.asp,
supposedly "may be printed out for study, or downloaded for classroom presentations, dissertations, or non-commercial Web sites ...." http://www.themorgan.org/music/imageUse.asp.

The scores are sliced up into little tiles like this.

The Flash application fetches them, then lays them side by side for display to the user. This is very simlar to how Google Maps works. If you want to get high resolution versions of these scores, you would have to reverse engineer how the Flash application fetches the tiles and reconstructs the score. It could be done, but it would be a fair amount of work, and I don't know if the people at the Morgan Library would appreciate it.

If you're really interested in pursuing this, you can examine how the Flash application fetches individual tiles by using FireBug, a FireFox plug-in.

I have made a Tutorial on how to fetch score from flash-based websites.
With a few tweaks here and there you could manage to fetch these. :D

Nice tutorial Generoso! I saw your original inquiry to Funper and have been toying with Dezoomify. I'm in the process of posting the MS for Brahm's Hungarian Dances. Interestingly, images from Morgan only take about 2 minutes to download and be stitched together on my pc but those from Juilliard take 10 minutes each. You may want to add some more information about using the list of URLs/base directories in a text file as batch downloading these files is the best way to go.
Thanks!

Thanks for that! I have added more information on how to Batch Download these. Please comment on things that are missing or I have not thought of yet. I am learning this (Command Line) as I go along also.
Non-the-less, I thought I would let everyone know about this method.

I'll have a look at that and at what they decide to scan and post. they have some important scores and manuscripts in my opinion, including Stanford's 2nd violin concerto (violin/piano, but i don't know if the orchestral version survives or was even written), and hope they decide to scan a fair number of them...
