The answer for Shostakovich is simple. No. With Prokofiev I'm not sure.

Not true.

Prokofiev actually wrote two cello pieces (that I know of), and they are both quite interesting.

1). Op.58 - Cello Concerto in E minor

2). Op.119 - Cello Sonata

Unfortunately, we do not currently have Op.58 on the IMSLP.

Solo cell then... well, there are still public domain Shostakovitch cello works. In terms of Prokofiev... nope, Prokofiev (as far as I know) didn't write any solo cello pieces.

I'm not aware of any Shostakovich works involving cello that are public domain. Obviously the only place they would be public domain is the US, and even then they would have to have been very early works. Can you enlighten us?

Every work Shostakovich has written for solo cello is in the public domain. This includes the 2 cello concertos

1.) Shostakovich wrote no works for solo cello that are in existence.
2.) Any Shostakovich published after 1922 was restored to copyright status by the TRIPS amendment to the GATT which took effect on 1 January, 1996.

Shostakovich died in 1975 (considerably less than 50 years ago) and only about 2-3 items were published before 1923 (all items published later were restored to copyright in the USA as of 1/1/1996). Apart 2-3 items in the USA and in some places like Afghanistan, Aruba and the Marshall Islands (which have no copyright laws), Shostakovich is protected worldwide. BKhon's brother must be posting here!

No, this is the real BKhon :) I was sort of joking around the concept of ambiguity. While everyone assumed we were talking about the IMSLP tagging system (Canada, USA, EU), I was referring to the places Carolus mentioned. Just a little friendly (and pointless) little dive to exploit the dangerous nature of ambiguity. Well, that's my attempt at terrible/out of place/provocative humor...

@ TheFirstCelloCYS

Just as further clarification, we've already established there are no public domain Shostakovich works involving cello, but there is one Prokofiev piece that IS public domain, and that is the Ballade, Op. 15 which you can find here:

For reference, Prokofiev actually wrote THREE pieces for cello and orchestra:
Cello Concerto in e, Op. 58
Sinfonia Concertante in e, Op. 125 (which is a reworking of the above)
Cello Concertino in g, Op. 132 (which was unfinished, completed by Rostropovich and orchestrated by Kabalevsky)

The last one is obviously not PD. Dunno about Op. 125.
