Schubert-Joachim Grand Duo

Post by Starrmark »

I believe Joachim died in 1909, so his orchestration of Schubert's Grand Duo is very likely PD.

Most likely. Good luck finding a copy, though.

While I don't have a copy myself, I believe it was published by Simrock. Abbado recorded it a few years ago, and I know Toscanini and Bruno Walter performed it several times each. So I don't think the music has disappeared.

FYI, a manuscript copy is reported to be available at an Italian library (Biblioteca di archeologia e storia dell'arte - Rome).

Harvard and Columbia both have a copy of the manuscript. And if we're talking about Franz Schubert, apparently Kalmus reprinted something (Catalog A 8069) by Schubert and Joachim, Symphony in C, op. 140 (D. 812) of 215 pages. Is this what you're after?

D 812 is indeed the Grand Duo. Joachim orchestrated it on the basis that he (and others) thought it was 'supposed' to be a symphony.

Then in that case this score is readily available from Kalmus as it's currently listed in the active catalog with the same number I gave.
