Well, I can also put them back into the page itself. An advantage of having them slightly more hidden is that it makes vandalism less likely; on the other hand, unregistered users cannot edit on IMSLP, so this may not be an issue.Peter wrote:That doesn't seem a logical location to me... Parbleu, I hadn't noticed! There were some invalid styles in the MediaWiki:Common.css, like "font-size:10" (size without unit is not allowed, except for 0). I presumed that whoever wrote this meant 10px, so I changed it accordingly, but I didn't notice the consequences. Maybe we should remove those font-size properties entirely, since before they were probably ignored by the browsers anyway.Peter wrote:Btw, you know what happened to the text on the homepage in the news and recent additions?
I'll do this right nowLeonard Vertighel wrote:Parbleu, I hadn't noticed! I just went to the IMSLP main page and.... shazzam! A very elegant re-designed page appears on my screen! Congratulations and thanks for a splendid job, Leonard!! Maybe it's just my ancient browser, but the section just below the main title block, where "Browse Score by" and "Other Languages" appear, seems to be flush right instead of centered, with the text running into the right edge of the brick-red colored block.
I'm running MSIE 5.5 on an ancient Mac (OS 9.22), so it may just be that my computer is too old! (Yes, I know I need to replace it - he-he.)

As far as I know, MSIE 5.5/Mac is actually superior to MSIE5/Win (which would probably shred the page to pieces - even IE6 is playing along rather unwillingly and with some minor quirks), but its CSS support is far from perfect. I'm afraid that researching the cause and possible workarounds would not be easy, and moreover I have no possibility to test it. Much as I hate to say it, I'm afraid you'll have to live with it for the while being...Carolus wrote:I'm running MSIE 5.5 on an ancient Mac (OS 9.22), so it may just be that my computer is too old! By the way, I'd suggest removing the "current events" link from the navigation bar. As it stands, it seems pretty useless to me.
The site map should also be phased out, as pages like the Community Portal probably do a better job at directing people to the pages they are looking for. I'm not sure if we should just remove it from the navigation bar, or replace it with some kind of "Reader Portal" (needs a better name) which would basically contain the "Browsing" section of the site map. Might be a bit redundant though, since the main entries are readily accessible from the sidebar, and the compositions lists are linked from the corresponding composer categories.

Use 'Community Portal' instead. The queue and all the projects are linked from there, so getting to the queue will take the same number of clicks as before, and getting to a specific project even one click less. Besides, regular contributors can also put their favourite links on their userpage, as many Wikipedians do.emeraldimp wrote:Oh noes! How would I get to the User scanning queue or the Community projects pages without 'Current Events'?
I think that's a bad idea. We should strive for a clear hierarchical site structure. For an experienced user it may seem useful to cram the entire community portal into the sidebar (though even that is questionable), but a newbie would then simply get lost.emeraldimp wrote:Maybe move the links to the sidebar instead?
'Main Page' is obviously the "root" of the entire site. 'Community portal' is the entry point for everything community/contributing related. 'Forums' is the central place for discussion. 'Help' should one day become the entry point of all the (technical) help pages.
'Recent changes' and 'Donations' are somewhat out of the hierarchy anyway, as is 'Random page'.
The four 'Browse by' links and the search function are the main entry points to the library itself.
The "toolbox" is far from perfect, but for the moment we'll have to live with it. Maybe we could remove both the 'Printable version' and 'Permanent link' entries, since they seem rather useless on IMSLP (normally you'll want to print the PDFs, not the pages; moreover, a printable version is generated automatically when you print a page!). If at some point the upload function will be integrated into the submission form, I will also propose the removal of the file upload link from the sidebar.

I looked there... I swear I did! (Just not hard enough... must remember to use search functions of browser!)Leonard Vertighel wrote:Use 'Community Portal' instead. Otherwise... the suggestions sound fine to me.

No need to blush Could be a sign that the portal structure is not yet clear enough. Putting the queue under "Contributing music scores" seemed the right thing to me, and the fact that it ended up rather at the bottom is due to my choice to put all the "how-to" pages first. But maybe users would expect to find the link somewhere else? I'm open to suggestions, as long as it fits somehow into the overall structure (or a complete new structure is proposed)...emeraldimp wrote:I looked there... I swear I did! Actually I would ask everybody to let me know if you don't find some link where you expect it (or vice versa). I'm trying to make the site structure as clear as possible, but the perfect solution simply does not exist, and there is always room for improvement.
By the way, how does the internationalization of the sidebar work?

Nope... and that is because I was too ignorant of the possibility back then. Currently the Main Page internationalization is hard coded into the code, hardly the place it should be. Half of the coding I spend on IMSLP is re-coding what I did before haha.Leonard Vertighel wrote:The language dependent link to the Main Page is not implemented via MediaWiki messages, as far as I can tell.
Anyway, once I figure out how the message system internationalization works (I still currently have no idea), I'll switch as much as I can to that. Btw, if you know how it works, you can alter the sidebar to use it (and I can learn from you )... there are a few things in it that need translating currently.
