Automatic Page Counter
Having seen some entries with "?" listed as the number of pages, it made me wonder how easy it would be to automatically count the pages of new submissions.

That's a good idea.
However, even if that kind of counter could be incorporated into the system, there still needs to be manual input by the uploader or a later hand that shows which pages in the total range are included in a file, and whether 2 pages from the original are included on one PDF page. E.g.:

Of course, we could also make that a required field in the submission process.
