Gedike, Aleksandr

Also spelled Goedicke, he has written 2 works involving clarinet -- the op.28 Two Pieces (Nocturne and Etude), and an op.50 Quintette for violin, clarinet, horn, cello, piano.

I have a copy of the op.28 which I am busy cleaning up and scanning, but I would very much like to have the op.50 if anyone has it.

Worldcat suggests the op.50 was first published in 1939 btw so in any case it probably can't be uploaded as pd-us here for awhile alas - sounds interesting...

It was late last night when I posted that, and I forgot to add what I should have asked along with it. We have quite a lot of Gedike on IMSLP, including the op.63 songs, which may have been published after the op.50. It is marked V/C/28, and is marked "Non-PD EU". Would the Quintette be in a similar situation, i.e. V/C/28 and uploadable?

Hrm. I think the opus 63 songs lack a copyright stamp on the score according to our entry for it, the catalog entry for the opus 50 quintet suggests (does not prove) it does have it- US law makes the difference there (though I am no expert)- if something was published for a certain period after 1922 without a valid copyright stamp (and certain other things hold) it may be public domain (though certain other things, like attempts to restore copyright at a later date, I seem to recall??????, have to be checked.) (Going by what I remember reading :) )

I seem to remember something about EU copyright law and orphan works. Does the EU law provide for a way to copy orphan works?

The Two Pieces op.28 seem to be out of print, and I also can't find the Quintette available anywhere. If these are orphan works, does that help in terms of uploading?

For me, worldcat shows the Quintet Op. 50 at Canterbury University, New Zealand.

Regarding EU law: As far as I know, works out of print for more than two years can be copied for personal study but not used for public performance without consent of the copyright holder.

"Goedicke 50" turns up the quintet at Canterbury, yes. (Always, always remember variant spellings - was that the issue? 50 has lots of spellings!

Actually, seriously, for 18th century works sometimes you do have to look under (composer name, or some other noun) XVI to find opus 16. In which case forget finding opus 50- searching for "L" is not going to turn up anything too specific unless you're very careful about advanced searching. But that was meant as a joke. Sorry.))

Though that said, oddly a basic search in their catalogue for "Goedicke" turns up nothing too. Worldcat's info may be out of date. Ah, no. In the Canterbury catalog it's stored under- once again- Gedike. Wouldn't you know... :) Found it, could even copy and paste their MARC listing for it here if one likes. Clarinet and piano etc. quintet op.50, Editions de musique SSR, (c) 1939... score and parts. 85pp.
