Ludvig Norman Viola Sonata

Post by WilliamBunting »

Norman has only two works on IMSLP, a surprise since he is said to be one of the great 19th century Swedes along with Lindblad and Berwald.

Could we possibly add this this work?

Sonate für Viola und Pianoforte : Op. 32 Ludvig Norman (1831-1885) published 1875 Leipzig : Kistner

There are copies in the Dutch national library, Berlin SBB and Russian national library at least.

This would add nicely to the good IMSLP collection of Romantic viola sonatas: Winkler, Juon, Walker, Vieuxtemps, Rubinstein, Kiel, Fuchs, Scharwenka, Bantock and Brucken Fock.

based on the 2 string quartets (and a little else, I think) I've heard by Norman, augmenting our meagre collection would be a good thing, I agree. Will see if the viola sonata is scanned in one of those places or somewhere online, or perhaps someone who has an early edition of it will do so!

also, the copy that BSB has (like quite a few places) is the 1985 Bernhard Päuler edition for Amadeus-Verlag (Wintherthur, Switzerland) - not surprising they have not scanned this in, as there may well be copyright issues there... Worldcat only lists 2 libraries (the Royal Library of the Netherlands, and the British Library at St. Pancras Reading Rooms) as having the original score, though individuals outside of libraries, or in libraries not covered or not fully covered by Worldcat of course may have it in their collections (or may have other editions made by editors who died before 1961- unlike Päuler- that therefore I think would be pd-ca and can be uploaded onto the IMSLP Canadian servers. Not an expert on this.)
