Berlioz fugue 1826

Post by Joe »

I'm looking for the fugue for the Prix de Rome competition 1826 by Berlioz. According to the Catalogue it is in New Berlioz Edition only (v.6). I could not find it anywhere. I would be grateful for any help.

It was only published in the NBE, thus under copyright.

Edited by a sometime IMSLP contributor, David Gilbert, back in 1998.

Only two of Berlioz's five Prix de Rome fugues are extant – and you can find the 1829 fugue on the Hector Berlioz website, provided you equip yourself with the Scorch plug-in (and don't use Firefox to browse the page, since it appears to be incompatible; I use Safari for Scorching):

From that webpage:
  • Though nominally written for voices the 1829 fugue is reproduced here with organ sounds in the interest of greater musicality.
Note to self: voices aren't capable of musicality.

When you're talking about MIDI sounds, that's pretty true usually. A MIDI organ tends to sound not bad, but a MIDI voice is often horrid (results may vary on what you're using but it's a good general truth)

Yeah, but as a bald statement in that webpage, it's fairly insulting to singers.
