I am a Chinese Musicology Student. My major is western 19th Century music. I am especially interetsed in Schubert.I want to do some researches on his opera. Although my school has the schubert complete work, they missed one of his greatest Opera , Fierrabras. After searching on the google, I am a bit frustrated. If I cannot find the score, I shall shun to another topic.I even cannot find one place to buy it. Could you or anyone you know upload it?Or, can you give me further information about where can I buy it at a reasonable prices? If you get some info ,can you write to me?Thanks a lot!

I have the Kalmus miniature score (reprint of the original Breitkopf & Hartel), but have the following problems:

1. It's about an inch thick (about 540 pages) and it looks like it will be almost impossible to scan without taking the binding apart.

2. I simply have had no time to scan anything (or indeed to do much except check the website some mornings while drinking coffee) for several months now, due to work commitments, and it doesn't look like it's going to ease up any time soon.

Homerdundas, are you out there? Any chance of getting "Fierrabras" from wherever you managed to find "Alfonso & Estrella"? (I was originally hoping to scan mine, but the universe is conspiring against me.) :?

Hello Aldona,
Thanks for your replay and information. I have asked Homerdundas last week.He said he hadn't that score.I am just wondering how could you get the score of Fierrabras?I have checked many websites, there was no one selling it.Can you tell me is it possible to have one at present? If you have some information, can you tell me?Thanks a lot!

The university library where I work has the Dover reprint of the older complete works:
Edition Breitkopf & Härtel critical edition of 1884-1897.
Published New York, Dover Publications [1965-1969]
Descr. 19 v.
Do you know which volume has Fierrabras?

I could try to scan it, but can't guarantee that it will be done quickly.

Quite possibly Aldona purchased her score from one of the (now defunct) music retailers here in Gotham City, who kept a colossal amount of stock of classical music in the knowledge it would eventually sell out... eventually.

In the meantime, the 1990s happened and the said retailers were purchased by Allans and Billy (call me Mister) Hyde. So you can't buy Fierrabras anywhere, since its both out of print and out of stock. Second hand is your best bet.

I found the copy in our library; it's v. 10 of the Dover reprint edition.

At 500+ pages, full size, this will take some time to scan, but I'll try. Maybe I can start tomorrow.

Good guess!

I have actually acquired a few things from the "now defunct" music retailer - unfortunately the last time I managed to stumble upon their premises was a few days AFTER they had closed.

I remember as a 13-14 year old during the school holidays, with my dad (also music enthusiast) spending the day in the city going around music shops, and walking into aforementioned "now defunct" store and thinking all my Christmases had come at once.

And then coming across a yellow Kalmus full score of "Alfonso & Estrella"...(yes, my addiction DOES go back that far!)...unfortunately at about $200 even back then, it was certainly out of reach of my pocket money and Dad couldn't justify spending that much, when there were music books to be purchased that WERE relevant to my music lessons at the time. But the quest was certainly on, and continued until Homerdundas so helpfully posted the score a few months ago, and on the eve of my birthday no less!

PML and other Melbourne folk might be interested to know that when aforementioned "now defunct" music retailer closed down, a lot of their sheet music stock was transferred to Billy Hyde's Music in Blackburn (much closer to where I hang out...hehehe) and some of it remains there to this day, yellowing Kalmus and Eulenburg scores hidden on the shelves among the newer material, and providing fodder for many a Friday night browse after work.

My copy of "Fierrabras", however, was purchased online through Amazon. If you do an Amazon search for "kalmus schubert" among "Books", you will find lots of interesting things. (All the Schubert Lieder volumes are gone, though, because I have already snapped them up. )

Yes, I've been out to the Blackburn store a couple of times in search of obscure scores that I remember being in the McKillop Street shop in years gone by. Sadly the collection is now a shadow of its former self. I well remember my first visit to Fine Music as a 20 year old, back when it was on the other side of the street, and my jaw nearly hitting the floor when I got to the collection of full scores. Sic transit gloria mundi...

Was just curious, if the score of such a work could really be completely out of print again...

If you search german libraries in the kvk (http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/kvk.html) you get a 2005 reprint in the Deutsches Musikarchiv Berlin (unfortunately a pure repository, no copying allowed), and it is still available, together with other very interesting scores at reasonable prices from Musikproduktion Höflich:
http://www.musikmph.de/musical_scores/c ... relist.htm

Scroll all the way to the bottom, operas are listed after the orchestral scores, Fierrabras (537p) sells for 85 euro.

Thanks for your concerns! That is very kind of you all. Thanks Kalliwoda for your information! However,I am at present in Shanghai, I cannot fly to Germany to get the score. The total fee for the airpost and score is beyond to me.I am also impossible to get the score in Australia.Maybe the only solution for me is to wait Lyle Neff to upload it.Or is it possible to have the second- hand Fierrabras,or the copy ?Does anyone has some fresh idea to deal with it?Many Thanks!

Thank you to Lyle for the Fierrabras uploads so far!

Does anybody know whether this opera score exists in a piano reduction?

Your welcome.

This is not a high-priority project for me, so it gets attention only on rainy days during my breaks at work at the library. Looks as if I might be able to scan some more of it next Monday.

I think I have at least 100 more pages to scan. It's supposed to be rainy again tomorrow, so maybe I can get through the rest this week.
