Kate Loder - 19th century composer -

(b Bath, 21 Aug 1825; d Headley, Surrey, 30 Aug 1904). Pianist and composer

Loder was one of the few women to develop as a substantial composer in England during the 2nd half of the 19th century. There is little about her on the net. My information comes from Groves.

It would be great if some of her music could appear here -

Amongst her instrumental works are: two string quartets (G minor, 1846; E minor, 1848), a piano trio, a sonata in E for violin and piano (performed at the Society of British Musicians, 5 Oct 1847) and various sonatas and other pieces for piano and for violin and piano.

I don't even see any entries whatsoever for this composer in WorldCat. Would she perhaps be under a different first name?

No, I don't, but I still don't see any entries in WorldCat, which means whatever survives of her work is probably locked up in some restricted archives somewhere.

http://www.viaf.org shows Kate Loder was the maiden name of Kate Thompson (1826–1904), described as a British pianist.

A little digging on genealogy websites confirms she was born at Bath, England, on 21 August 1825, married Sir Henry Thompson there on 16 December 1851, and died in Surrey on 30 August 1904. Her obituary two days later in The Times recorded:

Lady Thompson, widow of the famous surgeon, Sir Henry Thompson, died on Tuesday at Headley, Surrey, aged 79. Miss Kate Fanny Loder, daughter of Mr. George Loder, of Bath, had attained a considerable reputation as a pianist when, in 1851, she married Mr. Thimpson, who was already becoming known in his profession. Unfortunately, not long after her marriage, she was stricken with paralysis, which removed her absolutely from all the activities of life. Sir Henry Thompson died on April 18 last
