Hi,
I see that it is difficult to make good categories for genres, but I think it can be improved.
1) At the top of "Work genre" there are 4 "genres". Maybe we shouldn't speak about genres but about categories (Vocal, Instrumental etc.) as seen in the title bar of Vocal (non-operatic): "Category: Vocal (non-operatic)".
2) The devision in Opera and Non-operatic seems a little forced. This shows also in the fact Opera has only entrees, non-operatic has a lot of subgenres. I propose first to rename Vocal (non-operatic) into Vocal and then make Opera (with all its entries) a subgenre of Vocal.
3) At the moment there is no clear structure in Vocal (non-operatic): - Canon is grouped at sacred. Why? - There are a lot of "Other" subs, like "Other (sacred - SATB choir with accompaniment)" but SATB choir with accompaniment is not genre but an instrumentation. So I propose not to make different subsgenres for sacred and non-sacred vocal, but make a remark if needed behind the genre. The list of subgenres could be:
Aria Barbershop Canon (sacred) Canon (secular) Carol Cantata (sacred) Cantata (secular) Chanson Chant Folk song Hymn Lieder? Madrigal Mass Motet Oratorio Partsong ?? Requiem Song cycle?? Spiritual Other (sacred) Other (Secular)
As you see I left only 2 "Other" subgenres. From the General Information given to the music piece it will be clear from what time and in what style the piece was written and for what instrumentation
4 small remarks:
Villancico is a subgenre of Folk-song
Madrigal is somtimes seen as subgenre of Partsong more info: http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Partsong http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Madrigal
Spiritual is not a clear name as I explained on the page "Spiritual". Therefor I propose to change it to Spiritual (Negro).
