Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 wrong notes

Post by Rogerg »

I recently started working on this piece but as usual began with a difficult section, Tempo Giusto Vivace. 17 bars into this section there are some wrong notes in the left hand, repeated again in bars 18, 21 and 22 of the section. The C Sharps could not possibly be what Liszt intended since the right hand is playing in B Major. Wrong notes are nothing unusual in sheet music but what I find bizarre is that every edition of the piece, 12 on IMSLP, (and I have another one not on IMSLP), has the same wrong notes, from the 1st edition in 1851 to the last in 1972. This is 13 different editors. How could none the these editors have ever noticed this, especially in such a popular piece? Isn't one reason for editing to correct errors or maybe just to suggest that there may be errors of certain notes? Does anyone think Liszt intended these notes?

Why would C-sharp be wrong in B major?

It would work only if you wanted a certain dissonance but I don't think Liszt intended that here. Play it as written and see if you think it sounds right. I think he intended D Sharp or maybe B but not C Sharp.
