I wouldn't agree that that work is obscure...compared to Chaikovsky's symphonies, yes, but not compared to even Khachaturyan's.

I would say the Balakirev is pretty obscure. What do you base that on besides comparing it to Khachaturian?

I would say the Balakirev is pretty obscure.

Balakirev as a name isn't obscure at all. He was one of The Five for god sakes.
Now his Symphonies aren't all that known, but obscure is a bit pushing it.

I agree. His symphonies may not get much attention, but they are major works in the output of a pretty major composer.
