The pianist who gave the first performance of Webern's Variations was Peter Stadlen. The dedicatee of the work, Eduard Steuermann, never performed it. Stadlen, coached by the composer for the premiere, subsequently published a facsimile/transcription of his annotated score (Anton Webern, Variationen fur Klavier, Peter Stadlen, ed. (Vienna: Universal Edition No. 16845, 1979)).
