Can you help?

Post by Davydov »

The categorization project has been running for almost two years, and it's 98% complete (with 116,683 out of 119,294 scores now 'tagged' and searchable by our category walker). But there's a stubborn block of around 2,500 works that are proving difficult to categorize, mainly because we don't know their instrumentation. This might be because the uploader of the scores on that page didn't provide enough details, or left that field completely blank. Sometimes only arrangements have been uploaded, and we don't know the instruments or voices used in the original work. This means that the tagging team either have to download every score to see what instruments are used, or try to find out from reference books or other sources, which is a very slow process.

So we're looking for volunteers to go through the list of Untagged Pages to check that the instrumentation is given correctly. This is usually shown towards the bottom of each workpage, in the "General Information" section. If it's missing or incomplete then it would be really helpful if you could edit the page to include the correct details in the line that starts with "|Instrumentation=".

To categorize the piece we need to know the names of the instruments involved, and the ranges of any solo voices or choruses (e.g. "SATB soloists", or "TTB chorus"). Any arrangements or transcriptions on the workpage, can be safely ignored as these are handled differently — it's just the instruments and voices used in the original work that we need to know. All help will be gratefully received :)

With the operas that are on that page, we need to know whether there is a chorus at all -- some operas have only vocal soloists.

With any Baroque work for orchestra, we tag the continuo part, so we need to know whether it is orchestra alone or orchestra with continuo.

Also, it might be a good idea to post here what works you've done so that we can quickly find them, tag them, and get them OFF the list! :D

Thanks.

In fact we don't even need to ask people to do that, since we can monitor amendments via the "Related Changes" link on the sidebar :-)

Didn't know about that one, thanks for the tip!

One other thing - the instrumentation is supposed to be the original instrumentation, because arrangement instrumentations are dealt with in the arrangement headers.

Some of the works might need a bit of research.
