30 day tagging Marathon in July 2015!

Post by Sallen112 »

Hello everyone!

I would like to propose this July 2015 to finally clear out the untagged list here: http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Untagged_pages

Currently we have an average around 2500 workpages left untagged! If we could get 10 determined and motivated volenteers to tag 10 works (new or old, mostly old) daily for an entire month, the untagged list would be completely gone (10x10=100 daily tags x 30= 3,000 workpages!). I believe this can be done. Any volenteers willing to learn how to tag must read over this first before tagging:
http://imslp.org/wiki/IMSLP:Tagging

I know there are many users that are on here everyday and if they take the time to just tag 10 works out of there day for a month, we would be completely done by the time the month ends! Please guys, I think this would be a first for the tagging team to finally be caught up with this massive project, Davydov and Steltz started five years ago, I hate to see them be so behind forever.

Does anyone here have access to Grove Music Online? This is a site we will need (Davydov has access as well as Steltz) for the pieces with lack of Info for tagging (Renaissance, Baroque mainly). Also remember guys, once we commit to a date, I expect everyone to be on the site sometime throughout the day, make it a habit to sit down for a half an hour, even if you have had a stressful day or whatever to fit the time in. The thing is I don't want to see the people who want to do it at first (now!) after some amount of days suddenly they forget to come on and do the daily 10 tags minimum. Please this is only going to take 30 days and then afterwards we will be back down to a couple people to tag daily (hopefully).

It would be great to finally clear them all! We're just asking people to spare a few minutes each day tagging 10 works (or more if you want), to try to clear the backlog once and for all.

If you've read the guidelines and would like to help then please post your name here, and after we get to 10 we'll set a start date for the 'marathon' :!:

We should have the start date be on the first of the month (I am guessing June or July this summer, being July is 31 days). The reason for the summer is because this is when most people are off (students, vacation time from work, etc.).

Count me in!

Very good idea and it can improve our community effort to an objective.

It's worth to remember that that less than 3% of untagged works we have today is already a great achievement. Remember that every big library in the world has a kind of storage room with fragments, miscellaneous and not identifiable works. As our virtual library, most of the times the librarians can't simply through this material away.

To put the counter to 0 I think it'll very hard task (maybe impossible?), but lets try our best. There are some works which only a very specialist on that matter would be able to point the correct tags and, of course, WIMA editions (most of the Renaissance and Baroque eras) and pages with incomplete scores.

Just for curiosity, on CategoryWalker we can see the number of untagged pages by period (it's curious to see also the less tagged composers):

Baroque: 932
Renaissance: 763
Romantic: 448
Classical: 267
Modern: 60
Medieval: 44
Early 20th century: 33

And finally, I'll be more available in July. But if we decide to June, it's ok also.

Cheers!

I'm moving this thread to IMSLP Announcements so that it can be more visible. The marathon will take place during July -- but only if we have enough volunteers. We're half way to the minimum ten we need, so please sign up below if you want to help. Thanks!

Davydov I just updated the title with the decided date then in July so it is clear to any person who is interested and everyone knows when it is.

I will most likely be able to volunteer. That should be enough of a verbal commitment to count toward the ten.

Thanks Icactus. Now we just need 3 or 4 more other volunteers before July.

You should try messaging all the admins to see if others will join. I only saw this by complete chance otherwise I would have never heard about it.

icactus I have been doing this for some already. Schissel is not sure if he would like to do it, I would like to see if Carolus would help out with this since he is on here everyday and I think he would be able to try to be on here earlier to get this done or whatever. Notenschreiber isn't sure either if he will be on around July but he is helping out now by tagging pieces gradually now until July.

Would it help if I tagged my own uploads? I put in a lot of work to determine the correct instrumentation for the musica colonial collection so I could tackle that if you like?

Tim it would help to tag your own works. But the main point of this 30 day event is we want to tag ALL pieces by the end of July that is backlogged over the years. Your new uploads is OK to tag but we want people to be able to tag through the whole list.

Actually Tim could I persuade you to help with tagging the renissance and baroque era works from the untagged list possibly come July? I know your interested in this area of music, more so than I am. And would be an enormous help since the absolute majority of works untagged comes from this part.

I am glad to help. I am off of work July/August and will have time to do at least 10 per day. I also have access to Grove Online.
