If you aren't afraid of technically challenging material as a pianist (!), then Medtner's Russian romances are superb material - a true duet between the pianist and the singer. "Telega Zhizn'" ('The Chariot Of Life') and "Zimny Vecher'" ("A Winter Evening") are two of t...

Re: Nineteenth Century Atonality
Poulenc was born in 1899 , and thus lived only his first year in the C19th. I doubt that he produced much in that year - well, not much music, anyhow ;) Finding atonality in works by a composer who died in 1963 is hardly surprising  Busoni - who was teaching harmony and counterpoint in Berlin...

Re: Mendelssohn's Composition
Mendelssohn is a competent composer - no better or worse than his contemporaries (Weber, Hummel, Marschner, Spohr, Cherubini) - but somehow rather more well-known? The Octet and the incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream are some of his best work. There's no longer a fashion for the large-sc...

Re: Can I have some suggestions about a bassoon/oboe?
I fear that you'd only get junk if you bought a bassoon less than $600 - unless you lucked-out and bought one second-hand from someone who didn't realise the true value (for example, from a probate sale), or who had pressing reasons to make a quick sale. The other problem is that since you don't yet...

Re: Which is your favorite Brandenburg Concerto?
The subtle instrumentation of No 6 is a winner for me - although often we don't hear Bach's specified line-up of 2 violas, 2 gambas, cello, violone & continuo. As a recorder-player I enjoy No 2 the best - and with a good trumpeter the balance 'problems' aren't serious at all. I ought to enjoy No...

Re: which kind of music did Mozart not composed?
Never mind then. Concertante cello comes to mind. Is there any Mozart piece with an orchestra where there is an obbligato cello line? There are Haydn symphony movements that have this, but I can't think of any by Mozart. As for a obbligato viola line, fuggeddaboutit. --Sixtus I can think of at leas...

Re: Why is there no english opera?
Actually there's been a lot of English opera... but it's not been especially well cared for since! C17th As well as Purcell (obviously) there were Locke, Blow, Eccles and a few others too. C18th The first part of the C18th was largely dominated by foreign composers working in Britain - not only Hand...
