Re: Upcoming changes

Here's another idea for raising money. Why doesn't IMSLP do a deal with an on-demand publisher such as Lulu to allow users, at the click of a button, to get a score printed in book form. I do this with some of my own re-typeset scores and the cost is not much greater than using an inkjet printer, ev...

Re: Upcoming changes

"For instance, you might send out, for those who paid, a regular newsletter, telling them about current projects and telling them how their money is being used for the benefit of all". (Stephen West) An interesting thought, but who would be the "you" tasked with doing this? Ther...

Re: Upcoming changes

Why not start by making membership completely voluntary...with no penalty for those who choose not to become members? A lot of people here have said that the 15 second delay is not really a problem for users, so it is probably a poor incentive for getting them to pay. On the other hand it has a sign...

Re: Upcoming changes

I have produced a relatively small number of modern editions of early music. Initially, I hosted these on my own website, but then I discovered IMSLP and decided that there were all sorts of good reasons for moving the scores here. However, like others who have posted in this thread, I understood th...

Re: Pieces transcribed from Musica Britannica

The difference is that, in the case of Beethoven's sonatas, someone who cannot afford to buy the new edition, has the option of alternative public domain editions. In the case of Musica Britannica, Volume XVIII, the claim is that it was the first time that most of this music was ever published. (It ...

Re: Pieces transcribed from Musica Britannica

On second thoughts, this may not be so clear-cut. Although it is stated that the 'chief purpose [of the MB series] is an accurate and scholarly presentation of the original texts', it is clear that the editor of the particular volume I am looking at has done quite a lot of editorial work. He has wri...

Re: Pieces transcribed from Musica Britannica

OK thanks. The volume I'm looking at was published in 1961.

Pieces transcribed from Musica Britannica

The Musica Britannica series, published by Steiner and Bell, set out (according to its own homepage at http://www.musicabritannica.org.uk/index.html ) to publish ‘English Music derived from non-copyright sources earlier than the twentieth century which has not been made available to the public by co...

Re: Dulcis memoria (Anonymous)

Many thanks! The piece, although written for voices, has long been played on viols, too. When I looked under Sandrin, I was surprised not to find a viol edition and was thinking of doing one of my own, possibly incorporating some of the divisions that Ortiz wrote for the piece (in the 1550s, I think...

Re: Dulcis memoria (Anonymous)

Hi Carolus. I'm surprised that you consider them different. Are we looking at the same things?... I'm comparing the Sandrin score by Ulrich Alpers with the Fantasia on 'Dulcis memoria' score by Albert Folop. I've had another look and can't see any substantive difference between them. They are barred...

Dulcis memoria (Anonymous)

I just noticed the piece entitled Dulcis memoria (Anonymous), for 4 viols. I am pretty sure this is just an arrangement, for viols, of Doulce memoire en plaisir consommée (Sandrin). I'm not sure what needs to be done to check if this is indeed the case and, if so, to move it to an arrangements tab o...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

My thanks to everyone for resolving this. I'm sorry it is not quite resolved to everyone's satisfaction, but I'm sure that having a single category for the instrument is better than having several different names for the same thing.

Cheers

Steve

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Regarding Schein: I was just using him as an example. The point I was trying to make is that we don't want to have to make a complex judgement about categories whenever a new piece of music is added to IMSLP: we need a simple policy that can be understood by editors who may not be experts in the fie...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Hi Albert Thanks for replying. I absolutely agree that the viol-type instruments deserve to be kept quite distinct from the modern viola and its relatives. Also, I'm sure you are correct about the historical and geographical distinctions between the terms "viola da gamba" , "gamba&quo...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Regarding the suggestion about distinguishing between viols of different ranges (treble, tenor, etc.), I'm not sure this particularly helpful for solo music, because that is mostly for the bass viol, I think. Regarding consort music, it would be great to have it categorised according to the particul...
