How are modified scores listed?
There are a number of Faure songs where the text is completely illegible. The texts of these songs are available elsewhaere, so I am planning on using Photoshop to replace the text. If I upload one of these edited scores, how should it be listed on a work page? Would it be a separate edition, or wou...

Re: Orchestral Parts Project
Ah, thanks Carolus. It took me a bit to figure out what you meant by the "purchase bar". It didn't list what I was looking for, but I was able to find it by going directly to the Kalmus web site. All I was looking for the cello part to the tenor aria from Paulus. The list on IMSLP includes...

Re: Orchestral Parts Project
I'm looking for the orchestral parts to Mendelssohn's Paulus. This is not so much a request for someone to upload the parts to IMSLP as it is a request to help me find the parts to begin with. I did some poking on WorldCat, and I couldn't find any good way of separating out vocal scores, full scores...

Re: Translating a copyrighted poem
I believe the link I provided may be helpful... I hadn't considered being hired to do a translation. That is an interesting twist. I was thinking more in terms of projects like recmusic.org, which hosts user submitted translations of art song lyrics. Since I would be doing the translation voluntari...

Re: Translating a copyrighted poem
At the same time, I imagine the author would not be allowed to distribute the translation without the permission of the translator. Would that be correct?Melodia wrote:It seems to me based on what I've read that the translation itself would fall under 'academic fair use' but couldn't be distributed.

Translating a copyrighted poem
Let's say I have a German poem that is still under copyright, and I make a translation of it to English. What is the copyright status of my English translation?
My hunch is that the translation would be treated as a work with two authors, the original poet and the translator.

Re: John Dowland lute song transcriptions
IIRC, I have to check 28 years after publication for the renewal notice? The copyright is 1925, so 28 years later would bie 1953. To be thorough, I checked '52, '53, and '54. I didn't see any record for "Fifty songs selected from the works of John Dowland." Is there anything else I need to...

John Dowland lute song transcriptions
I have two volumes of lute songs by John Dowland transcribed for piano. The source material is certainly public domain, but I'm not sure about the transcription. The copyright date on the transcriptions is 1925. This may be problematic for US copyright, but the preface states the following. The orig...

Music for a beginner guitar player
I have a friend who plays guitar and wants to learn to read standard notation. He is a fairly skilled player, but only reads tabs. Can anyone suggest some easy pieces for him to learn reading standard notation?

Re: Poulenc will be in PD in 2014, soooooon!
Please be aware that, by copying the rental parts (including re-typing, which is anyway a form of copy), you might be potentially liable for: - breaching the local copyright law, if applicable (for example, if you are located in Germany, Poulenc will be PD in 2034); - breaching the rental agreement...

Re: Haydn songs, urtext
Awesome. There are only a handful of Haydn songs available on IMSLP at the moment, and those editions are a bit sad. It will be nice to have clean, modern editions.

Re: Poulenc will be in PD in 2014, soooooon!
my fear is that we will (at least not in our livetimes) never see the weird copyright-laws regarding printed music or old recordings change for the better. The lobby pushing for even stronger and longer copyrights is just to strong. I think the internet is going to change all that. When, I'm not su...

Re: Haydn songs, urtext
There is a new preface. The preface states that "this edition of Haydn is essentially a reproduction of the musical text contained in the volume published by Henle in 1960... However, it contains a number of source based alterations." Reading the rest of the preface, most of the alteration...

Re: General Questions About Usage
Scanning a document is just a form of copying. If I xerox a public domain document, I do not get copyrights on my xerox copy. Similarly, the scanner does not have any copyright claim.

Re: Haydn songs, urtext
I found this record in the 1960 copyright catalog. JOSEPH HAYDN WERKE; hrsg. vom Joseph Haydn- Ins ti tut, K61n, unter der Leltung von Jens Peter Larsen. Mttnchen, 0. Henle Verlag, 1959. Contents separately reg. : EFO-71649- 71650. This seems to be the original copyright registration of the source s...
