Schoenberg Harmonielehre
Wonderful to have the 1922 edition on IMSLP. Would it be possible to add the original 1911 text? The differences are fascinating.

Webern Orchestral Pieces Op. 6, original edition
Webern published the original version of his Op. 6 Pieces himself in 1913 (according to Moldenhauer [706-7], not 1910), revising the work in 1928, althought UE did not issue it (the revision) until 1956. The original version appeared in 1961 (all dates from Moldenhauer). The Wiener Stadt- und Landes...

Adolf Bernhard Marx
I notice a number of books appearing recently--Berlioz' Instrumentation Treatise, and Draeske's Harmony Book. To date there is only one by Marx (on Beethoven's Piano Sonatas), an important writer on music. Does anyone have original German texts or translations that they could post?

Re: Berg, 4 Clarinet Pieces, Op.5
May I pick up a point that I made in the course of the discussions about the Berg Op. 5? The Orchestral Pieces Op. 6 were first published by UE in a beautiful facsimile edition in 1923, the first two being given their first performance the same year. Berg revised the pieces for the first complete pe...

Re: Manuscripts of Mahler, Schoenberg
The Arnold Schoenberg Center website (http://www.schoenberg.at go to Arnold Schoenberg on the left hand menu and choose compositions; where the sources are available there will be a link) has a pretty good collection of manuscripts--final scores, drafts & sketches--which may be downloaded. Here,...

Re: Schütz, old edition
Difficult to believe that Breitkopf can still get people to part with that sort of money, given that there at least two modern editions in progress. Maybe the publisher should be asked if it wants to put the Spitta edition on-line at IMSLP. Unfortunately I don't have access to the edition.

Re: Monteverdi works from UE
I agree that the partbooks would be a good addition to IMSLP. They are reproduced as part of the Cremona edition, and, while they (presumably) cannot be copied from that source, there must be earlier reproductions that could now be scanned (as with L'Orfeo). Incidentally, Scribd has had no scruples ...

Schütz, old edition
It would be good to have the 'old' Schütz edition on IMSLP. It preserves the time values of the original, and, although the clefs are 'old' (as they are in the Bach Gesellschaft) it is a very useful source for those wanting to make their own performing editions. Dover put out a volume of the Kleine ...

Re: Monteverdi works from UE
Dover had in their catalogue Books IV, V & VIII of the Madrigals reprinted from the Malipiero edition, so maybe this throws some light on the extent of the editor's contribution (which was, principally, the transcription of the part-books into score, and adjudication when common sense indicated ...

Re: Berg, 4 Clarinet Pieces, Op.5
The Henle editor states unequivocally that the UE edition uses the same plates as the 1920 printing, and 'has only [a] few changes in the music text,' so, even if the UE is not deemed PD, the earlier score would be good to have on IMSLP. Pity about Wozzeck ; likewise, presumably, the original score ...

Re: Berg, 4 Clarinet Pieces, Op.5
You are correct about Klein, although he simply made Berg's short score playable. The British Library gives 1922 as the publication date, noting 'A slip bearing the imprint Universal-Edition, Wien, Leipzig, has been pasted on the titlepage over the words "Eigentum des Komponisten."'

Re: Berg, 4 Clarinet Pieces, Op.5
According to the introduction and critical commentary appended to the Henle edition, the first edition--Verlag der Schlesinger'schen Buch- und Musikhandlung (Rob. Lienau), Berlin--appeared in 1920. There is a letter from Berg to Schoenberg (14th August 1920, Briefwechsel Schoenberg-Berg, II 57) in w...

Berg, 4 Clarinet Pieces, Op.5
It not time for the unblocking of the Op. 5 Clarinet Pieces by Berg? A print alternative to the UE edition of 1924 (which was not the first publication, the composer having published the score at his own expense in 1920. UE simply corrected errors in the original, without, as far as I am aware, re-e...
