Is there any public domain music files available to download in mp3, ogg, midi, wav or other file format?
This project is creating some free graphics: http://www.openclipart.org/ I wonder if there is some similar project for music and sound efects.
I will create some simple sound files (wav) and I will place them into the Public Domain. I can't believe that soon I will be the first person in the entire world to do that!?
where can I find some public domain music files?

http://www.freesound.org/ has a lot of CC sound effects, and http://cocoa.fbk.eu:8282/ has a lot of PD recordings (11,000) but BE WEARY, a few of composers IN the PD recordings (*cough*Shostakovich*endcough*) are still in copyright (thus illegal).
http://www.pianosociety.com/ has some free Piano recordings.

I started the project here:
http://nolinks.leadhoster.com/files/sounds/snds_200ms/
It's just a collection of simple sounds but generated with different methods and a base frequency range of 150 Hz - 1450 Hz. You can even listen them online from the web page. It might not be much, but some people could find that usefull. There are already 1500 different sounds in the collection.
I am working on producing more sounds like that with longer durations and more combinations. Can anyone help me with the hosting? Because in the end the collection will need a few gigabytes, and at moment the free hosting provider that I am using is providing just 200 MB and also does not allow mp3 format and .zip archives (I wish I can make them available in zip, so people won't have to download them one by one).

Hello, my name is Rolf den Otter and I work for the European Archive.
This archive is accesable for everyone except the usa (sorry!), and at the moment the lp collection of the Dutch radio is uploaded:
http://www.europarchive.org/
852 lp's with classical music...
My own hobby page is this one:
http://docent.cmd.hro.nl/otter/
and my old page, with a 1953 recording of Helene Boschi playing Mozart's 22nd piano concewrt (never issued on cd!) is here:
http://homepages.ipact.nl/~otterhouse/
I hope you can use these (copyrightfree !) music files together with the copyrightfree music scores.
Greetings,
Rolf den Otter
