Franz Berwald Op. 2

Post by JimL »

I encountered the Konzertstück for Bassoon and Orchestra in F by Franz Berwald on YouTube recently, and noticed something a bit askew about it. It took me a little bit of time to figure out what it was, but when I looked up his Violin Concerto, I realized that both works have the same opus number. How is this possible?

Lacking any obvious evidence of an explanation online, I'm guessing that the composer and/or whoever published his music lost track of the correct opus assignments.

There is a link on the workpage "Preface by Roderick Shape". This preface contains the information (as a footnote), that Berwald himself uses Op.2 for three works.

Mozart’s publishers assigned op.1 (contemporaneously) to 3 sets of works, iirc. Such things are always possible, in any case...
