Vivaldi cello concerts

Post by ctesibius »

Hi all,
it is a pity only few of the Vivaldi cello concertos are available in the collection.
RV catalog lists 30 opus and 28 of them were published by Malipiero (Ricordi) in the '50s-'60s.
I aware that continuo realization will prevent upload them in IMSLP, but is there any issues to have the strings part?
To which extent is a continuo realization considered protected by copyright? I mean something like in many critical editions where the contino is done mechanically.

Thanks
Ctesibius

Seconded! Many of those are wonderful. If the figured bass realisation is the blocking factor in the Ricordi editions, could it be blanked out? Would that make an upload lawful? Better to have a full score with a blanked out right hand in the keyboard than no score at all....

I think best yet would be if we knew where their manuscripts were and went from there (scanning the manuscripts or preparing independent, not dependent, editions- if it is worth doing it is worth doing well) rather than messing with others' in-copyright editions... where some countries' copyright laws may? protect things done to make the score performable besides just the continuo realization.

Most of the concertos should be in the Foa'-Giordano collection in Biblioteca Nazione Turin
http://www.bnto.librari.beniculturali.i ... =8&menun=5
Unfortunately the links to digital collections seem to be broken.
Under Raccolta Foa'-Giordano in the Internet Culturale there are only 17 documents, mostly cantatas

Since a number of the scores listed there are almost definitely in copyright (has Vallier given his permission for anything of his to be posted there?), I don't think that site helps at all - without at least that much one begins to be queasy whether the works there are even the works they're represented as being (a claim one always should try to check of course in any case... Beethoven's opus 53 wasn't a string quartet but one wouldn't think that from Mutopia at one point one of whose users submitted his opus 59 no.3 quartet with that ... never mind, tangent- sort of.)

btw, a 1744 manuscript-copy of RV 404 is at the library in Schwerin, according to RISM. No sign of a digital scan, though...

Well, I went to Torino, Italy to the Biblioteca Nationale (I heard that they had the manuscripts of many pieces by Vivaldi, and it is true). There I had on the table in front of me THE original manuscripts of Vivaldi. WOW! I found as many of the Cello Concertos as I could. Then I asked the VERY KIND people there if I it would be possible to make a photocopy or a scan of these pieces. They said no but if I had a digital camera with me I could take photos as long as there was no flash (I suppose the flash would somehow change the ink or the paper?) So, I made as many photos in the hour that I had with my handy iPhone 4s.(They closed the manuscript department at 2pm and it was already 1 o'clock so my time was very limited.) Well, I then asked what I should pay. Nothing. So here are the fruits of my trip. The very RARE manuscripts of the cello concertos of Vivaldi! Unfortunately, I did not have the time to find more pieces but the Library is still there.

Enjoy these manuscripts. I, myself have been looking for these for a long-long time. Especially to know which notes Vivaldi actually wrote in his 2 Cello Concerto. (as I am sure many cellist have wondered at one time).
