Lincolnshire Posy

Post by k.laviollette »

I have read on the Petrucci Library's wish list that Lincolnshire Posy is free from copyrights in the States, but not anywhere else. Is this true? And if it is, then why can't members in the States get their hands on it?

It is true that some works by Grainger are currently in the public domain in the United States. It is also a fact that he is currently protected in Canada until 1 January, 2012 and in the EU (and other life + 70 territories) for considerably longer. The 1940 version of the condensed score published by Schott is probably public domain in the United States, but not any others. It's just a matter of someone getting their hands on a copy, scanning it competently, and submitting it to the site, which have not happened as of yet. If someone were to do these things, it would be available for download to users in the US only.

As Daphnis mentioned, Grainger enters the Canadian public domain on January 1, 2012. Items posted to the Canadian server will be blocked until 12:00:01 AM on January 1st, 2012. It's always fun to see a new crop of works released from copyright jail on New Year's Day.

Purgatory seems a more apt word, there being no criminal act by the composer to result in the ban.
