Milhaud's Le boeuf sur le toit is apparently public domain in the US. Does that apply to the orchestra only version as well? (I'm not talking about the version for violin solo otherwise known as Cinema-Fantasie.) If the piece is public domain in the US, the orchestra parts are nowhere to be found through a public domain publisher (Kalmus, Lucks) but still rental only via Boosey & Hawkes. Do they still own exclusive distribution rights even after a piece has passed on to the public domain?

As far as I can tell, the orchestral version was first published by Eschig in 1949, making it under copyright in the US for some decades to come - which would explain why it's still available via rental only.

I can't recall the exact publication date, but it is certainly still protected, otherwise I would have added it along with the other Milhaud US-PD works a while back.
