The composer of several books of vocal studies http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_athr_dp ... .%20Lutgen

I am having some trouble finding biographical details on this composer, does anyone know if the modern editions listed there by Amazon would be PD? I'm looking specifically at the ones published in 1902 and then re-printed, but if anyone knows his dates it would be great.

Lutgen is 1835 to 1870.

Many thanks.

So does that mean that all of the items in the Amazon listing is public domain outside of the U.S. even if I am using a more recently printed edition? I am not sure how to establish when the first publications of some of these are.

More importantly, does that mean I can upload the modern Schirmer re-prints?

You would probably not be able to upload any edition which is less than 25 years old, but reprints of older editions - even if they were issued last week - are fine. One cannot legally claim copyright for merely reprinting a public domain score (though some publishers place bogus copyright claims on such scores).
