Re: Solo Endings?
Vaughan Williams has several examples. A solo viola ends "In the Fen Country" and "The Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains" and "The Lark Ascending" ends with the solo violin. His "Pastoral Symphony" ends with a soprano singing a wordless mellisma.

Les Frissons (collection of mélodies)?
Hello all! I was wondering if anyone possesses the collection "Les Frissons," a collection of mélodies by various French composers to texts by the rather unimpressive poet Paul Gravollet? It was published in 1905 by Hamelle and includes Debussy's "Dans le jardin" and Ravel's &quo...

Re: Does anybody recognizes opera tunes here?
While I'm not a complete expert on that era of Italian opera, I know that many Italian composers of the 19th century who wrote instumental music tended to model their melodies and (simple) harmonies on the bel canto era composers, such as Rossini. The notes beforehand make it sound as if this collec...

The use of Beethoven for the speech portion and closing of "The King's Speech" is quite appropriate and moving.

Re: Most Unusual Pieces
From a purely aural viewpoint, works by Babbitt ("Philomel"), Davidovsky (Synchronisms), Subotnick ("Silver Apples to the Moon"), Boulez (Piano Sonatas), Xenakis (as already discussed), and even Crumb (Vox Balaenae) come to mind. To a listener accumstomed to the three B's, this m...

Re: Five Bagatelles - Gerald Finzi
While I am a pianist, I have played these pieces and am quite fond of them. They epitomize Finzi's lyrical long lined-melodies, much like those found in his songs. They also display the influence of Bach on Finzi's music (especially in the walking bass lines of the Prelude and Fughetta). The Romance...

Solo Version of Brahms op. 23
I am wondering if anyone has the solo version of Brahms' Variations on a theme of Schumann op. 23, origanally for piano four hands? It was made by Theodore Kirchner. Thanks so much!

I tend to gravitate towards "undiscovered beauties" frequently, and while they are not all completely "undiscovered," here are some of my favorites that I encourage you to seek out: Lili Boulanger: Sous bois Walter Braunfels: Prelude to Die Vögel Franz Schrecker: the duet in Act ...
