The term "Stage Works" is more widely used, but we could change to "Theatrical Works", unless anyone has strong objections?KGill wrote:If 'Stage Works' is to be taken broadly as theatrical works in general, why not make it simpler and just call it 'Theatrical Works'?

Re: Proposed new genres
On a point of clarification, the term "Stage Works" is to be taken broadly, and includes any music written to accompany theatrical action (including film scores heard in movie theatres). There are advantages that are all too easily overlooked to having the two classification systems runnin...

Re: Proposed new genres
... the word "genre" is definitely creating misunderstandings in some readers and is leaving me with little incentive to keep up with the project. It would be a shame to see the new category system suffer from reliance on that word. The trouble is that the Wiki has many "Categories&q...

Re: Proposed new genres
[quote="supertchan"How about word of Concertante?[/quote] "Concertante" will cover all works for solo instrument and orchestra, not just those which are called concertos. For people who specifically want to pick out concertos from this genre, there will be new sub-genres for &quo...

Re: Proposed new genres
Looking at the project page I can see how my poor choice of wording could have been misleading, so I've changed the layout to make things clearer.

Re: Proposed new genres
"Stage Works" is a super-category containing other categories, not the works themselves. The works are categorized "Opera", "Ballet" etc, which categories are then grouped under "Stage Works". Mixing all these works together in the super-category is not stand...

Don't worry too much about it, as the genres will all be changing soon anyway (see the thread in the "Other" forum).

Re: Proposed new genres
If we don't think this through, and debate what we need, as you mention, we will just end up with a random jumble of categories which will not help users find things. You may recall that I pointed out the difficulties involved when you first pressed for these categories, as there's not even agreeme...

Re: Proposed new genres
Thanks for the latest responses. To reply first to Operalala — the sub-genres shown are only possible examples, and people should be encouraged to add to them as they think necessary. I expect as more and more works are labelled there will be debates over the definitions of "Motets", "...

Re: Proposed new genres
Absolutely. The instructional sub-genre can exist under both chamber and keyboard genres, making it easier to distinguish the keyboard instructional works from those for other instruments.steltz wrote:The non-keyboard instructional can't very well go under chamber, can it?

Re: Proposed new genres
Where do unaccompanied non-keyboard pieces go? Specifically the ones that can be used in concerts (if instructional sub-category can take care of exercises and instructional etudes). For example, solo flute. They would come under the heading of "Chamber" works (as is generally the case in...

Re: Proposed new genres
Thanks to everyone for their responses so far. The option of adding another genre for instructional exercises has been mentioned, but we also have the option of using this as a sub-genre instead (e.g. under "Keyboard"). What does everyone think? I understand Lyle's preference for the use o...

Re: Proposed new genres
Don't worry, that isn't part of the proposals. And if a way could be found to make these "manual" lists "automatic", they would be even more useful than they already are.Notenschreiber wrote:But I hope, that "Browse manual instrumentation lists" will not vanish!

Proposed new genres
After taking into account all the feedback from previous discussions (see elsewhere in this Forum), I've drastically altered the proposals for new genres, which can be seen here: http://imslp.org/wiki/User:P.davydov/Genre_Categories There are now only 8 proposed broad categories, with optional 'sub-...

Re: [FEAT] browse by composer nationality?
Thanks, Feldmahler, that's very clear and helpful. I've just tested the new template entries for nationality, which works very well. As it's a relatively quick cut and paste job to modify the pages where the categories have already been added, I'd prefer to do this so that people don't pick up any '...
