Re: The End of "Genres"
This form of "Tagging" can work only if it is standardized, and modularized As I said before, the work will be done by a small group of volunteers following a series of logical guidelines There's clearly a demand for categories like "Lieder", which will be tagged as such only wh...

Re: The End of "Genres"
Hi Feldmahler. Thanks for your response, and I was intending to contact you tonight anyway, but I'll do my best to answer your questions now. On your first point, technically the tags are just Wiki categories, and will work in the same way as the nationality categories do now, so that adding "T...

Re: The End of "Genres"
Steltz, the point I am making is that with hundreds of category permutations, so much will be "mis-cataloged" that your custom-made search terms will not bring up what you are looking for, if you yourself did not catalog them, because no one will actually go through all those categories f...

Re: The End of "Genres"
This would create an infinite number of "tags", especially if uploaders are expected to tag German Art Songs "Lieder for Solo Voice and Piano", are French Art Songs to be "Melodies for Solo Voice and Piano" Well, no, it would create precisely two tags: Lieder for Solo ...

Re: Art Song category
Every single tag thought up would then have to be a category, and then each and every category/tag would itself have to be properly categorized, something that would be easier to deal with on the work page. Once a tag has been created for the first time the process becomes extremely simple. Takinge...

Re: Art Song category
I have no problem if somebody wants to tag things to their heart's content, but we will still need a stable category system. Well the tags are building blocks for new categories, and unless I'm missing something then the new system should provide all the categories that you (and everyone else so fa...

The End of "Genres"
For some time now we've been discussing how to replace the present inefficient systems of "genres" used on IMSLP to classify works. After some useful discussions earlier in the year, I'd now like to present what I really believe is a solution that should please (nearly?) everybody. See her...

Re: Art Song category
To Everyone: After an unusual flash of inspriation, I think I've come up with a solution that will please everyone (yes, really!) :D It's outlined here . I think all of us (including me) have been looking at this the wrong way around — that is, trying to come up with large categories which are slice...

Re: Art Song category
If anyone who has any objections to these category changes could spell out what the actual problems might be, and suggest constructive improvements, please do so. Otherwise, I'm fixing these long-overdue categories starting tomorrow. Operalala Hey, Operalala, it's completely unacceptable of you to ...

Re: Art Song category
You may remember that we couldn't come up with a consensus on what constitutes an "Art Song" (or "Popular Song" come to that), because people's interpretations differed widely. I certainly think it would be unwise to add to the existing list of categories until a new IMSLP-wide s...

Re: Brahms Hungarian Dances
As far as the page titles go, I'd recommend: * 21 Hungarian Dances (piamo), WoO 1 (Brahms, Johannes) * 21 Hungarian Dances (orchestra), WoO 1 (Brahms, Johannes) ... with the second page including Brahms's own orchestration of 1, 3 and 10 as the main entry, and the "Arrangements and Transcriptio...

Re: [FEAT] browse by composer nationality?
I'd have liked to have done more, but I've been really tied up with my day job the last few weeks. But congratulations to you on starting the project and seeing it through, and it will be really helpful for our users!
I don't suppose you fancy sorting out the genres next?
