Re: Nineteenth Century Atonality
Fun, digging up 3 years old threads :) The absence of a tonal centre is what makes music atonal, not the absence of functional harmony. For instance, as a composer I still use traditional key indications, in order to fixate the tonal centre of the piece. But that doesn't mean the pieces adhere to th...

Re: Piano 4 hands scores should have spacer page.
It should be a general rule to keep the arrangement of the pages (right and left - odd and even pages) always exactly like in the original print, and not only in 4-hands music. In keyboard scores in particular, the editor often takes care to place a page turn at a spot where the player has one hand ...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.
In addition to what Cypressdome said, I could quote the openings of both Brahms' Clarinet Quintet and 4th Symphony as some of the most beautiful melodies ever written (thus invalidating your claim that he couldn't write a decent melody) - and Schumann's Heine-songs as examples of some of the most in...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.
*sigh* I don't even know how to reply to this. I was prepared to do a detailed critique of your post, but the fact that you present your personal preferences as the Absolute Unquestionable Truth and the garbled argumentation that you use to "prove" your right made me back off. Not gonna in...

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.
Goldberg Variations is the most perfect piece of music ever composed, or at least very close to it. What's wrong with the Glenn Gould performances? I think they're fantastic. I shouldn't complain about Gould, since it was he who got me to love Bach's keyboard pieces in the first place (through his ...

Re: The British Symphony Competition of 1876
35 full scale symphonies? Makes one realize the massive amount of music that's been written in the 19th century, and the possibilities of digging up some hidden gems. Too bad most modern orchestras are reluctant to program anything that isn't a proven success with the audience, so the same couple of...

Or do you mean obtain them legally for use in countries where his music isn't PD yet?

Re: Overrated, Overused, Overdone, underrated etc.
Reviving the topic by digging up some old sores... BraHams, hands down. his music is just abominably boring and horribly written. It's a pain that his music is still played in the concert halls toady. Statements like this make my heart bleed, since I consider Brahms one of the towering geniuses of t...

Re: Schoenberg, Ein Stelldichein
Problem is that the piece has been left unfinished by Schoenberg, and the completion/reconstruction by Cerha (first performed in 1966) is not PD.
The UE edition includes the addictions by Cerha, I think.

Re: Louis H. Enter, Hans Nissen and J. Ch. Hess
Super Mario is immortal, it seems. Ok, let's forget about him then. One unrelated question: Paul Gilson, died in april 1942: PD in EU or not? The 70+ years rule would apply here, but I heard something about work only entering the PD the next year after the 70th year? Would that make it januari 1st 2...

Re: Louis H. Enter, Hans Nissen and J. Ch. Hess
Thanks again for the useful info, guys. I need your help finding some composer dates again! Mario van Overeem, Belgian organ composer who left a Harmonium method, some harp pieces and songs, among others. Born in 1872, but either my Google-fu is weak or there's really nothing on the net about his ex...

Re: Louis H. Enter, Hans Nissen and J. Ch. Hess
Thanks for the info, guys. The date 1943 makes sense since the score is dedicated to the memory of Nissen's mother, who died that year.
Nissen is clearly non-PD EU then.
If it's PD US, would it be legal for me as an EU resident to upload it? I always wondered about the legality of that.

Thanks Max! Apparently he was the father of Charles Léon Hess, who already has a page here.
I'll add the date to the page.

Louis H. Enter, Hans Nissen and J. Ch. Hess
1. Anyone heard of the (probably french or belgian) composer Louis H. Enter? I've got a book of 6 piano pieces, titled "Les Miniatures", published by Alsbach, Amsterdam in 1937. Can't find any info or dates of birth and death of this composer. Maybe it's a pseudonym? 2. Same goes for Hans ...
