I have the masters music edition of this piece which lists Günter Hausswald (1908-1974) as the editor. Looking it up on worldcat the original was published by Hofmeister probably in 1958. Does this fall under the 25 year scientific edition rule? Is there another reason why this is PD worldwide?

This is usually a manual process of extracting the images from the PDF then removing the offending block with an image editor. If it's in the same place consistently then it can all probably be automated. I'm sure imagemagick can blank out sections of an image. (If it's not in a consistent place we ...

The work to do this just hasn't been done. I agree that it would be very useful. Though it would require some disambiguation pages for many composers.

I believe it was added before the down time. I don't remember if I added it or not. It is among the university of michigan's online scores and I at least have it converted to PDF here locally. If it's not there let me know.
